We are always buying new books! One of our challenges is buying the books that students at WHS really want to read! So, please let us know! When you suggest a book our buying power becomes your buying power and ultimately the book collection at WHS also becomes yours!!

AJC Decatur Book Festival: I cannot wait!

The AJC Decatur Book Festival will be held Labor Day Weekend, September 3-5, on and around the downtown Decatur Square. The list of teen authors scheduled to appear is unbelievable. Cassandra Clare, author of Mortal Instruments will speak about her new series The Infernal Devices and sign copies of her books.

A “Zombies vs Vampires” panel featuring Carrie Ryan will be held, and a Youth Poetry Slam competition where poets read or recite original work will be completely run by teenagers.

The first slam poet will perform before the slam begins and slam Edgar Allan Poe, in celebration of the 200^th anniversary of his birth.

I can’t wait!! The AJC Decatur Book Festival presented by Dekalb Medical is the largest independent book festival in the country and the fourth largest overall. The Decatur Square will be filled with readings and panels, and live music! A real literary fair!!

Meet Carrie before Sex and the City!

My daughter read it in one day! She loved it, and she hasn’t seen the show. The voice is not only Carrie but also any young girl in her Senior year. She’s a fledging writer, and she has friendships and relationships as enduring and endearing as Samantha, Charlotte, Miranda, Aiden and Big. The opening pages have her wearing white go-go boots…cracked and decidedly out of style, but oh so Carrie.

The entire career center collection has been replaced with NEW books!! The career collection at WHS now contains books on all the hottest new careers as well as books covering the full spectrum of employment. Careers in the gaming industry, engineering, forensics, ethnobotany, finance are all represented. If you are curious about what your future could be, or you are an underclassman who is thinking ahead towards your Senior Project: Vision Quest, come on in to the media center and check out the new books.

We’ve recently received two shipments of books!! We have new vampire series…and next in your favorites like Tempted the new House of Night novel …and nonofiction that is diverse and informative! Come check out the new display Outstanding Books for the College Bound and Lifetime Learner. This week and next we are featuring books from this ALA list in the sciences and social sciences. Teen Read Week 2009 is October 18-24, 2009

MORPH yourself BEYOND REALITY: I will hold lunch time workshops using Sqirlz Morph software. At these workshops, you will learn to morph two pictures beyond reality. Please save TWO similar photos…two school pictures…two pictures with headshots that are similar in shape and size… to your MY DOCUMENTS or on a FLASH DRIVE. Morphs will be published on the media center website. See the example below.

It’s great to see everyone back at school! We have had over 6,000 individual student visits to the media center since the first day of school! We have two new book displays: one on WAR the other features books that have been made in to movies. Also check out your revamped CAREERS section with all updated books on how to get the career you want! We are expecting a huge NEW BOOK shipment in soon, so don’t miss it!
